To the last over matches which make us ecstatic and nail-bitingly anxious at the same time.

“Dhoni finishes off in style. A magnificent strike into the crowd! India lift the World Cup after 28 years!”

Dear Cricket,

There are three things that India royally loves:

politics, cinema and you.

My true tryst with you began when I was going over to the dark side i.e. when I had developed a slight interest in Indian television. My mother for one would never have had her daughter watch overly dramatic and unnecessarily makeup women fighting over a spoon or some other trivial issue.

So she put on her “mama boots” and forced me into watching your matches.

Being a teenager with an attitude my first urge was to rebel and rebel I did. But alas I soon surrendered, swept off my feet by your charisma.

And now, lo and behold I am, like many in our country, a fan of yours. An embarrassingly crazy one, probably just a few notches below those who revert to Hanuman Chalisa to make the team win.

So thank you.

“Dhoni finishes off in style. A magnificent strike into the crowd! India lift the World Cup after 28 years!”

Thank you for giving us a moment that will last an entire lifetime.

And thank you for the teams, the players and your overly enthusiastic, somewhat patriotic fans. You are not just a game, you are more of an emotion.

An emotion that brings out so much more. To the last over matches which make us ecstatic and nail-bitingly anxious at the same time. We love to watch the crowds cheer for India in their full lung screaming desh bhakti.  It somehow makes us feel more connected to us. But frankly, for us, there are few things greater than hearing our team being declared as world champions (be it in sports or even Sudoku). It drives us into a frenzy. Some go into full-on Hanuman jumping act while some do an Oscar-winning performance of chest-beating h screaming the Nana Patekar way. Full lunged cheers can be heard from probably every other house.

So here's to you and all that you have brought to our lives. Here's to your magic.

Forever yours,

Cricket Enthusiasts
